Council for Unity Sponsors "Clean Up the Graffiti" Day
(March 31, 2009—Riverhead, NY) Riverhead student and adult members of the Council For Unity, an organization dedicated to reducing violence in schools and communities, conducted a “Graffiti Clean Up Day” in the Town of Riverhead on Saturday, March 28, 2009, from 10AM to approximately 3PM. There were four teams, 42 students and 40 adults, and eight sites. Sites included the Cauliflower Association’s barn at the intersection of Route 58 and Mill Road, a building on Pulaski Street by Stotsky's Park, a building at Pulaski and Roanoke, three sites on Marcy Avenue, a building on Northville Tpke. and Polish Town. The students and adults met in the high school cafeteria at 9:30AM for breakfast. Buses transported them to the clean up sites at 10AM.
“I’ was happy to help,” stated Town Councilwoman Barbara Blass. “This is where we live, our town, and I’m just as tired as anyone else of seeing graffiti on the buildings.” Ms. Blass and Councilman John Dunleavy from the Town Board were among those adults who helped the Council for Unity members paint over the graffiti on the Cauliflower Association’s barn on Route 58 and Mill Road, while Assemblyman Marc Alessi worked on a building near Stotzky Park.
